The Albert Dock, with the river Mersey and Birkenhead in the background.
The photograph is poorly reproduced because of distortion of the coloured glass screening now used at the top of the beacon from where the photograph was taken.
The Albert Dock was built between 1841 and 1848, but was opened in 1846 by Prince Albert when a great Banquet was held in the main building. It is one of the earliest examples of an enclosed dock. Original view
