The Vines Hotel, Lime Street, also known as 'The Grapes' or even 'The Big House', or perhaps 'The Clock'. Many other Liverpool pubs are known by another nickname or two.
Designed by Walter Thomas in the Edwardian Baroque style, The Vines stands on the corner of Lime Street and Copperas Hill. The outside is of ornate carved stone topped with a tall tower over looking Ranelagh Street.
Along with many other city pubs the Vines is reputed to have smuggler passages leading from the cellars down towards the river.
