The Beacon, originally a rotating restaurant (The Tower Restaurant opened in 1971) capped what is in fact a the chimney to St Johns shopping centre.
After remaining unused for some years following a fire in 1984, the restauant area is now occupied by the local commercial radio station :- Radio City.
Lazer lights and fireworks have in the past been launched from the top.
