The Britannia Adelphi Hotel designed by Frank Atkinson for a railway company and opened in 1912 and consequentially nationalised in 1948. This is the second Adelphi Hotel built on the site of a pavilion and tea garden. Positioned equal distance between Lime Street and Central main line railway stations it was built to accommodate the wealthy as they passed through Liverpool for their transalantic sea crossing.
Many famous people have stayed at the hotel including Kings, Queens, Princes, Presidents and Prime Ministers. A change of ownership into private hands in recent times has seen the addition of 'Britannia' to the name. It has also been the subject of a British television programme showing the comings and goings of its many visitors and the staff's efforts to make them comfortable whilst maintaining profitability for the owners.
