Elsewhere on this site are photographs taken by me in the 1960s of the tunnel entrance.
Construction commenced 16th December, 1925 and completed in 1934. It was opened by H.M. King George V, on 18th July, 1934. At the time of completion it was the longest underwater road tunnel in the world at 2.13miles long. If the branch tunnels and approaches are included it is 2.87miles in length. The width of the carriageway between kerbs is 36 feet to give four lanes of traffic.
The spoils from the tunnel construction were used to create the Otterspool Promenade.
The tunnel replaced the river Mersey goods ferries which sailed between Liverpool Birkenhead and Seacombe. The total cost of construction amounted to £7,750,000. The cost of operating the Tunnel is met by a Toll, currently £1.20 per journey.
Faced with growing congestion a second tunnel has since been constructed, and is now in use, its name: Kingsway.
