Walker Art Gallery, paid for by Sir Andrew Barclay Walker and opened by him in 1887. The gallery was designed by H.H. Vale.

The statues to each side of the entrance are by Warrington Wood and represent Raphael and Michelangelo.

Over the portico is a statue of a magestic matron seated on a bale of cotton, wearing a civic crown wreathed in laurels. She holds a ships propeller in her left hand and a trident in her right.

To the far left can be seen the columns of the Picton reading room and Hornby library. The foundation stone of the building was laid by Sir James Picton.
