There was a time when the tides of the river Mersey would reach the Church doors. Since the construction of the waterfront to form the Pier Head the tide is kept at bay.
At the turn of the 18th century the front of the Church was used as a bull baiting ground.
St Nicholas' is the parish Church of Liverpool and is known as the 'Sailors' Church' as St Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors. The weather vane which can just be seen in the photograph is in the shape of a ship an emblem of the saint.
To days spire replaces one which collapsed in 1810 causing some minor damage to the church. The old and new spires can be seen in the Herdman drawings.
There has been a church on the site since the 13th century. The Church bells are world famous as being amongst the finest rings.
