The Runcorn/Widnes transporter bridge

Now dismantled, the transporter bridge was replaced in the early 60's by the suspension bridge shown on the next photograph.

The transporter was the main river crossing between Widnes and Runcorn and formed a traffic bottleneck until the suspension bridge was opened. Today with an increase in traffic the suspension bridge now forms the equivalent 90's bottleneck.

Todays view in the year 2002, shows how much cleaner the river and the surrounding area has become.
