The suspension bridge forms the main river crossing between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes, removing the 50's traffic bottleneck caused by an old transporter bridge, seen in the background but now dismantled. Today with an increase in traffic across the suspension bridge it forms a traffic bottleneck of its own.

It was from this, as then, new bridge, that the photograph of the transporter bridge was taken.
